If you plan to use a manuscript collection during your visit, please contact the library to request a collection inventory or finding aid prior to your visit.
In addition to archives and photographs, artifacts are available through our Library & Research Center. Advance notice for certain objects may be required. To see a selection of our artifacts, visit h-co.org/collections.
Library staff is available during open hours to help you find materials of interest. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about our holdings or would like guidance in your research.
Our collection does not include government records, such as birth, death, marriage, probate, police, school, state, territorial, or land records. Our librarians can help you determine where such records are located and how to access them.
The Stephen H. Hart Library and Research Center is located on the 2nd floor of the History Colorado Center at 1200 Broadway. Researchers use the main entrance on Broadway.
When You Arrive
Please check in at the Concierge Desk in the main lobby of the History Colorado Center. The Concierge will issue a free ticket that will allow you to visit the Library & Research Center without paying museum admission. Library & Research Center tickets do not include admission to museum exhibits.
Researchers fill out a registration form when visiting the Library & Research Center. Please bring photo identification.
What to bring into the reading room
Loose paper, pencil, laptop computer or tablet, camera, photo identification.
Please turn your cell phone to silent.
Bring a flash drive if you’d like to save scans from microfilm.
What may not be brought into the reading room
Food and drink, candy, gum, water bottles, scanners, tripods, outerwear, umbrellas, folders, notebooks, binders, handbags, backpacks, briefcases.
Complimentary lockers are provided outside the reading room for personal belongings. Items too large for the lockers can be left with the Security Department on the 1st floor.
Complimentary WiFi is available. Computers are also available for catalog and internet access.
Microfilm access - cost of copies is 25 cents per page. We also have microfilm reader/scanners, which allow PDF scans to be made from microfilm. PDF scans are free of charge.
Camera Use – Visitors may use their own cameras to photograph most collection materials for personal research.
Copy Service - We are able to offer photocopies of many collection materials. All photocopies are made by staff. Copies are usually ready within 3-5 business days and can be delivered via mail or email.
Benefits for History Colorado members - History Colorado members enjoy discounts on many Library & Research Center services. Membership is not required to use the Library & Research Center.
When You Leave the Library
Before you leave, please stop at the reference desk to return all collection materials. The librarian will check materials back in and inspect all materials leaving the library.
Janis Falkenberg Reading Room Policies
Reading Room policies are intended to provide equal access to all to the History Colorado collection and to preserve the collection for future researchers.
Researchers may help themselves to any of the materials shelved in the Janis Falkenberg Reading Room. Most other materials are available by request. Staff retrieve requested materials for researchers.
Parking meters and surface parking lots are available in the blocks surrounding the History Colorado Center.
The Cultural Center Parking Garage is located across the street from our main entrance at Twelfth and Broadway. The garage entrance is on Twelfth Avenue, west of Broadway. Garage parking fees are $1-7 up to 5 hours and $22-25 for 5-24 hours.
The 1290 Broadway Parking Garage north of the History Colorado Center is available for public parking only on Saturdays. The Saturday parking fee is $5.
