Rocky Mountain National Park

National Park Service
  • Located in northern Colorado, near the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake.
  • Founded in 1915.
  • Rocky Mountain National Park protects mountain environments and includes 300 miles of hiking trails.
  • When you visit, keep an eye out for mountain wildlife like marmots, elk, and mountain goats.
  • Pikas prepare for winter by gathering grasses and flowers into their dens. They don’t hibernate but live off these plants in the winter. Researchers say that their seasonal plant supplies could fill a bathtub!.
  • Elk are social animals that often travel in herds of cows, calves and young bulls (called “spikes” because their antlers aren’t yet branched).
